Getting started

From zero to a connected dual-pane view in five minutes. This is the guide most users need first.

Docs / Getting started

1. Pick a build

Both builds are functionally identical. Choose:

  • Lite (~3 MB) if you already have the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime installed, or you don't mind installing it once.
  • Portable (~55 MB) if you want a single self-contained .exe - perfect for a USB stick.

Head to the download page to grab one.

2. First launch

Double-click C64UManager.App.exe. The first launch creates an empty settings/ folder next to the executable (or falls back to %APPDATA%\C64UManager\ if the install folder is read-only).

You'll see two file panes side by side. The left pane is your local PC; the right is intended for your Ultimate. Until you connect, the right pane stays empty.

3. Open the settings dialog

Press the gear icon in the title bar (or use the menu) to open Settings. You'll find tabs for Connection, UI, Launching, and Other.

4. Connect to your Ultimate

In the Connection tab, click Scan. Retro Commander sweeps your subnet for an Ultimate device. When it finds yours, click it to populate the host field. Save and close - the right pane should now list your remote files.

Set a REST password and FTP credentials only if your device requires them.

5. Try a launch

Highlight a .PRG (on either pane) and press F1. The default mechanism (Mount A) drops the file on virtual drive 8 and runs it. To inject straight into RAM instead, configure that launch for Inject - see Launching PRG files for the full menu.

6. Customise

  • Theme: Light, Dark, or Follow System.
  • Focus ring colour: hex input, six presets, opacity slider.
  • Docking: three preset layouts per pane; mirror layout to the other pane.
  • Home folders: per-pane starting paths so each side opens where you actually work.
